More Nice

I had noticed that our cathedral outside our window had been closed most of the time, so I was really glad I popped in there our first day. Yesterday I noticed the gate was open again so I dashed over to sit inside and spend a little more time!

It was so quiet and beautiful. Not as elaborate as its older counterparts in Italy, but as people quietly wandered through and waited for confession, it was clearly a community church.

I noticed some recent photographs of 3 people and know enough French to understand something had happened. On October 29, 2020, there was a horrible attack and these 3 people were stabbed to death in the church, my church, Nice’s church. It was deemed an Islamic extremist attack. I left feeling a little sick. Sorry, but I’m literally looking at it our my window this minute and that’s what happened and I wouldn’t feel right not saying it.

It was supposed to be rainy so we set off for a photography museum. The guys are still working hard to take down the stages and stuff from Carnaval de Nice. What a job!

When we got to the water, the sun surprised us and shone through for about a half hour.

Everyone was taking the #I LOVE NICE pics, so we got in on the action with 2 girls from Australia who asked us to take their photos!

On our first day in Nice there was a huge BOOM! Maybe I mentioned that. Well it happened again yesterday and I quick pulled out my phone and it was noon. Turns out that in 1861, Lord Thomas Coventry-More was spending the winter here with his wife. When she kept turning up late to make his lunch, he implemented a cannon shot to go off every day at noon and it still does. !?!?!?!? Whateverrrrrrrrr I actually didn’t believe it but it’s true. Hmmmmmm

Near the water was a small Statue of Liberty and other acknowledgements to the USA. I remember a friend from France explaining they were taught that if it wasn’t for the Americans, they would all be Germans.

We climbed mannnnnnny stairs to get to the top a hill where there was a tower and really huge park overlooking the city. That is the airport jutting out–the 3rd busiest in France after the 2 in Paris!

From another side of the park you could see a port where yachts come in.

The park had a beautiful waterfall and places for people to relax, playgrounds, even a place that sold sandwiches and wine.

Next to the park was two cemeteries; one was specifically Jewish. There was a long wall of names with a plaque. In 1942, they took the thousands of people named to the internment camp. They allowed them to leave their children behind. Once again, World War II was here, right here.

We had seen a place called Chicken N Chicken so we decided to split a chicken sandwich and fries. It was really good! Like Chick Fil-A good, and the fries were hot and yummy!

We found a place called Brew Dog that claimed to have Scottish IPAs on tap so we went there last night. It was so nice and the guy so friendly! We had buffalo chicken wings, more fries, and corn on the cob–it was excellent!

We walked back through Old Nice where there were several places that have live music. Wayne’s was busy but we easily found a seat and enjoyed a really great 3-person band from England called Sons of Guns. When I stopped at the restroom a young woman apologized because she couldn’t figure out how to turn on the water. Ha! no problem I thought, I just came from Italy and I figured I’d seen it all…………but in this bathroom, you use your knee to move a lever that turned on the water good grief!

The pretty Justice Building was lit up on the way home. Us party animals didn’t get home until 10 pm wow!

OMG… Those yachts look amazing! Lots of wealthy people, obviously… 🙂 Wayne’s looked like fun… I was wondering- is smoking allowed in bars/restaurants? Did you guys decide where you are going to next? Love you…!
